Background of the Study

The integration of information and communication technology (ICT) in education has transformed teaching and learning processes worldwide. In Ifo Local Government Area, Ogun State, the adoption of ICT tools is seen as a catalyst for enhancing instructional quality and student engagement (Balogun, 2023). ICT facilitates access to diverse learning resources, promotes interactive teaching methods, and supports individualized learning experiences (Okoro, 2024). Despite these advantages, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, limited teacher training, and inconsistent power supply may hinder the effective utilization of ICT in classrooms. This study assesses the impact of ICT on teaching and learning, focusing on its role in improving academic performance and digital literacy. It further explores the extent to which ICT integration aligns with curriculum goals and contributes to skill development. By drawing on recent empirical research and local case studies, the investigation aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the benefits and challenges associated with ICT adoption (Ibrahim, 2025).

Statement of the Problem

Despite the potential benefits of ICT in education, many schools in Ifo Local Government Area face significant challenges in its effective implementation (Balogun, 2023). Inadequate infrastructure, limited technical support, and insufficient teacher training have resulted in underutilization of ICT resources, thereby limiting their impact on teaching and learning (Okoro, 2024). Consequently, the anticipated improvements in academic performance and digital literacy remain largely unrealized. This study seeks to investigate these challenges and assess the true impact of ICT on educational outcomes, providing evidence-based recommendations for enhancing its integration (Ibrahim, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

1. To evaluate the current use of ICT in teaching and learning.

2. To assess the impact of ICT on academic performance and digital literacy.

3. To recommend strategies for effective ICT integration in schools.

Research Questions:

1. What is the extent of ICT adoption in Ifo schools?

2. How does ICT influence teaching and learning outcomes?

3. What challenges hinder effective ICT integration in education?

Research Hypotheses:

1. ICT integration positively affects student academic performance.

2. Effective teacher training enhances the benefits of ICT in classrooms.

3. Inadequate infrastructure negatively impacts ICT utilization in schools.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it provides critical insights into the role of ICT in enhancing education in Ifo Local Government Area. The findings will guide policymakers, educators, and stakeholders in implementing effective ICT strategies, leading to improved teaching practices and learning outcomes. This research contributes to the broader discourse on digital education reform (Balogun, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

The study is limited to assessing the impact of ICT in teaching and learning in Ifo Local Government Area, Ogun State. It does not address ICT usage in other sectors or regions.

Definitions of Terms:

1. ICT: Tools and technologies used for communication and information processing in education.

2. Digital literacy: The ability to effectively use digital tools and resources.

3. Infrastructure: The physical and organizational structures needed for ICT implementation.
